How to deal with the challenges of running a DevPS business

Why a traffic jam?

Well, this image is more than just a traffic jam. Look closely and you will see many vehicles of different sizes, even a bus, individual scooters and people walking, all going round in circles trying to get somewhere and not doing very well.

This seemed to us a perfect pictorial analogy for a DevPS business.

What is a DevPS business? Well the category covers businesses that lead by selling consulting time and often end up selling bespoke solutions, integrations, add-on modules, or even other companies’ software. There is a clear distinction between these companies and ISVs (Independent Software Vendors). The latter leads by selling products not services and their needs, while overlapping, are different.

With a DevPS business, you never know what is round the corner, while the work you have in hand piles up with changes (paid or unpaid). Managing the throughput of work is a serious challenge, multiple clients each with bespoke solutions add complexity and stretch your ability to maintain the institutional knowledge needed to support your past deliveries.

Hence the image.

Software has not been written for these businesses - the problem seemed too broad and complex. So, they buy point solutions: a service desk, a timesheet system, a CRM platform etc but the traffic jam continues.

What is needed is a single system that sits at the heart of the company, a system that everyone touches, that keeps track of all the business flows including the bugs, change requests, contract and projects. A system that allows dynamic resource allocation and management, tied to slippages and interwoven with financial performance and billing. A system that picks up leads and turns then into orders and projects in a single comprehensive company-wide process.

What is needed is a solution to unblock the traffic jam and get things flowing again so you can grow with confidence, taking on and maximising each opportunity.

This is the problem we wrote HarmonyPSA to solve. It’s the reason Harmony’s 15 functional areas exist around a single data model that can be configured with ease to address the way you work and the products you sell.

From an amazing service desk to powerful project management, combining built-in deferred revenue management with a transactional CRM that auto-generates fully formed contracts, there is nothing else quite like it.

We guarantee you will be surprised that software this comprehensive exists.
